Our role and partners

We work with Grampian Disability Sport and have key links with schools, day centres and other agencies to deliver a coordinated approach to disability sport across Aberdeenshire. With Scottish Disability Sport and Grampian Special Olympics, we ensure people with disabilities are included in sport and physical activity opportunities

With our partners we:

  • offer UK Disability Inclusion Training such as Physical Education within schools
  • run an annual calendar of events and competitive opportunities
  • establish seamless pathways for sporting talent to progress from regional to national structures and international representation and recognise sporting achievement of coaches and athletes in disability sport
  • support coaches, leaders, teachers, volunteers and officials through a comprehensive education and training programme
  • implement and manage sports specific programmes for athletics, swimming and additional Commonwealth and Paralympic sports
  • raise awareness of sporting opportunities for people with disabilities by running core multi sport and sports specific classes

Disability Sport sessions

Our Disability Sport sessions are available during term time and are run as blocks of sessions where payments are made at the first attendance. To take part in these sessions or get more information contact our Sports Officer.

Activities for Children

Active Schools fully encourages children with physical, sensory and learning disabilities to attend our sessions. Our coaches have attended various workshops and training sessions approved by Scottish Disability Sport and have experience in working with youngsters with a variety of additional support needs. We invite parents and carers to talk to us about their child’s specific needs and to let us know about any measures we should put in place to accommodate their child. If there is a need for one-to-one supervision of the child we would invite a carer or parent along to the sessions.

If you are looking for activities for school aged children then visit your local Active Schools area page for details of the programme available.

Volunteering

If you are interested in providing sport and physical activity for all, have you considered giving volunteering a go?

We are looking for eager and motivated volunteers to contribute to the development of projects and partnerships in a sporting and physical activity environment (incorporating sport, play, health and active travel) for young people and adults.

If you are enthusiastic, driven with excellent interpersonal skills who can help grasp opportunities to develop sport and physical activity within Aberdeenshire then get in touch.

Regardless of your interests, availability and experience we can find an opportunity to suit your needs.

In return for volunteering with us you will receive:

  • Access to Training including NGB qualifications (where appropriate)
  • Volunteer Handbook
  • Opportunity to work with children from various backgrounds and abilities
  • Opportunity to meet and work with people with similar interests
  • Support and mentoring from experienced coordinators
