Teachers from across Aberdeenshire made their way to Garioch Sports Centre on Monday, to take part in Tennis Workshops from The Judy Murray Foundation, arranged by Active Schools Aberdeenshire as part of the support being provided to the overall development of tennis locally by Aberdeenshire Council.
Over 50 Primary and Secondary staff, including many PE Teachers and Visiting PE Specialist Teachers received a surprise on their arrival, when Judy Murray herself was waiting for them and she then took them through two ninety minute workshops with the first workshop focusing on Secondary Teachers. This involved demonstrations of games and routines that will bring benefits to both the curricular and extra-curricular settings whilst the afternoon session focused on Primary staff and saw a highly interactive workshop that showed the options of introducing tennis in small schools and also ensuring that participation was at the forefront, again both in the curricular and extra-curricular settings
Linked to the pending development of a new three court Indoor Tennis Centre at Garioch Sports Centre in 2021, the event has now opened up new opportunities for Active Schools to work with the staff who attended the workshops and further develop the options to grow tennis across Aberdeenshire, as both a curricular and extra-curricular resource and achieve many of the outcomes in the council’s Sport and Physical Activity Strategy 2018-2028.
