Ellon Modern Apprentices

Finlay Murdoch and Jamie Park were presented with certificates after finishing their L2 Modern Apprenticeship in Sport and Active Leisure by Community Leisure Officer Camille Russell and Formartine Area Manager Amanda Roe on Friday, June 21.  

 Finlay and Jamie took up their posts as Modern Apprentices a year ago and both have now secured full-time permanent posts.  They were mentored by Steffi Buchan herself a past Modern Apprentice. 

Steffi was the first MA at
Ellon and is now a part-time Duty Officer, a post she combines with being a Leisure Assistant, Swimming Instructor and RLSS Trainer Assessor.  

During their year in the apprentice scheme, as well as their college work, Finlay and Jamie have completed their National Pool Lifeguard Qualification and their Swimming Teachers qualification. 

Finlay wanted to study for a qualification but also needed to earn money so the opportunity to do both at once as a Modern Apprentice – Aberdeenshire Council pays the National Living wage to all its apprentices – was what attracted him. He says he has really enjoyed making new friends and building good relationships with his colleagues.  His future plans include further study and continuing a career in sport and leisure. 

With Finlay and Jamie now having completed their apprenticeships another recruit is already on their path to success.

I am delighted that we have been able to help them on their way to a fulfilling career in leisure. Aberdeenshire Council is proud of its commitment to the apprenticeship scheme and the fact we pay all our apprentices the Living Wage demonstrates how much we value them. The Modern Apprentice programme is proving to be a successful way for Live Life Aberdeenshire to bring in young employees”.

 Chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Culture and Sport Sub-Committee, David Cook, said: “One of our strategic objectives is to encourage all forms of supporting people into work. We really value our enthusiastic and committed staff who are key to providing an excellent service and find it very worthwhile investing in their training.”
