The Active Schools North team held their annual athletics event on Saturday 29th June at Catto Park, Peterhead. A glorious summers afternoon helping towards a friendly, competitive atmosphere where over 150 athletes competed.
At the annual event, P5 – P7 aged athletes from Banff, Ellon, Fraserburgh, Mintlaw, Peterhead and Turriff school networks all compete against each other. Teams are selected after individual network trials. The trials at each network work differently. Mintlaw’s trials are held at the same time as the inter schools athletics evening. Turriff, Banff and Ellon hold their trials on an evening after school. Fraserburgh and Peterhead networks introduced inter school trials this year and used them as part of their selection process.
On the 29th June, athletes competed in up to three different disciplines, (one track & two field or two track and one field event). The events are 100m, 200m, long jump, shot put and javelin. Athletes compete for individual gold, silver or bronze medals as well as points for their network team. Points are awarded as follows: 1st = 6 points, 2nd = 5 points, 3rd = 4 points, 4th = 3 points, 5th = 2 points and 6th = 1 point.
After a closely fought event, the winning team was Turriff. Well done team Turriff. Also, well done to all the individual medal winners. Some of the events were very close and had several medal winners.
And thank you so much to all the fantastic volunteers. Not only for your help during the event but also at the individual trials. Without your help and support these events are not possible. Finally, special thanks to Peterhead Athletics Club for their home bakes and drinks stall keeping all spectators watered and fed.
