Health Checks 2024

Health Check Poster

Fishing is a tough and challenging job and it is important to look after your health and wellbeing while working at sea, at home and to help stay healthy and independent into retirement.

We offer FREE HEALTH CHECKS at harbourside for both active and retired fishermen and their families throughout the year.

Knowing your blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose numbers can give an indication of your current overall health and help you make small, simple changes to improve health and reduce the risk of developing health conditions. Your Healthy Lifestyle Advisor can also offer advice on healthy eating and weight management.

Look out for dates, times and venues advertised throughout the year or contact Catriona to arrange a more suitable time if working away at sea.

Healthy Eating, Nutrition and Weight Management Advice

Fishermen face unique pressures doing their job which can impact both physical and mental health.

Being able to eat a healthy balanced diet helps our bodies get the nutrients required to work well and feel good each day. Evidence also shows eating a healthy balanced diet can reduce the risk of diseases such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and some types of cancers. (British Nutrition Foundation).

Knowing what we should eat, what changes we can make to benefit our health and manage our weight and how to go about it however can be difficult.

Your SeaFit Healthy Lifestyle Advisor, a registered associate nutritionist, can offer support and advice around healthy eating, nutrition and weight management both to active and retired fishermen, and their immediate families.

If you would like to take that first step and find out how to go about making small changes towards a healthier lifestyle contact Catriona.

SHOUT!

We have recently launched a new mental health text support service for fishermen & their families.

Shout provides free support 24 hours, 7 days a week, using a confidential service for people when they feel they need immediate support and someone to talk to.

Fishermen face constant pressures but can find it difficult to access the necessary healthcare and support due to the uncertain nature of their job. This will help to provide that immediate support when someone is struggling to cope, feeling low, anxious, stressed or depressed.

Text the word ‘FISH’ to 85258 for free, any time, day or night.

(Most major mobile networks are free, although some may charge for texts.)

More information on the project, supported by the Merchant Navy Welfare Board, can be found here: http://ow.ly/z4WG50LV0VS
