This one day introduction to hillwalking and lightweight camping course is aimed at those who wish to develop their outdoor leadership skills with a view to participating in our Lowhills Training Scheme.
The Lowhills Gateway course is designed to equip staff and volunteers who have little or no hillwalking experience with the skills and confidence to go hillwalking and lightweight camping.
This course is recommended for those responsible for young people on walks and camping trips undertaken in non-remote terrain below 300m. A considerable range of educational activity on foot takes place at low level, much of which is more appropriately considered as "off-site" activity rather than hillwalking.
Training is not specifically required to operate at low level. However, both the learning value and safe conduct of low-level activity may be considerably enhanced by participation in the Lowhills Gateway course. This is especially true for coastal and cliff-top walking for which the full Lowhills training would be strongly recommended.
