Holiday Camps Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the programme for?

The programme is open to children aged 5 to 14 years. Children will be split into smaller age groups wherever possible to ensure age appropriate delivery. To some extent this will depend on overall numbers.

If you have a mature 4 or 5 year old who is starting school after the summer and who you think is capable of taking part, please call the facility so that suitability can be discussed prior to booking.

Who will be looking after the children?

There will be Leaders who are all experienced in looking after children and running activities and will be responsible for the children’s overall welfare throughout the day. There will also be specialist deliverers like sports coaches and artists taking some of the sessions. The Community Leisure Officer and Duty Officers will be in overall charge of the programme with Active Schools Coordinators also assisting.

What are the staff to child ratios?

There will always be a minimum of two members of staff with the children. For numbers up to 20 there will be two leaders, for 21 to 30 there will be 3 leaders, for 31 to 40 there will be 4 leaders.

What will the children be doing?

A varied timetable of sports and cultural activities will be prepared for each week and each programme is different according to the facilities and staff available locally. If a child really doesn’t want to do a particular programmed activity then the Leaders will attempt to provide an alternative but this may not always be possible. The detailed programmes will be available around 4 weeks before the start of the holidays.

What are the times?

The core times of the programme are 9am to 5pm. You may also book a half day either from 9am to 12:30pm or 1:30pm to 5pm.

However if you need to drop children off earlier you can do so from 7:30am and pick them up between 5pm and 6pm. During the early drop off and late pick up children will be supervised and will undertake quiet activities.

What about food?

No food or drink – other than tap water – will be provided by the programme so children must bring everything they need for the whole day with them. There will be morning and afternoon breaks as well as lunch time.

What do they need to wear?

Most of the activities are physically active and so clothes which allow free movement and shoes which are suitable for running around in should be worn. On some days swimming kit will be needed. A warm, waterproof jacket should always be brought whatever the weather forecast or activity. Please tie up long hair and wear minimal jewellery.

What should they NOT bring?

Children should not take high value items with them – eg. ipods, phones, jewellery, cash, as the leaders cannot not be responsible for looking after valuables and their security cannot be guaranteed.

Is there a discount for people on a low income?

There is a 60% discount for people on a low income who meet the requirements of the scheme

Is this activity included in the Active Aberdeenshire membership?

This programme is not included in the Active Aberdeenshire membership scheme. However there are other activities over the summer which are part of the membership scheme. For details please ask at your local facility.

What if I want to withdraw my child for any reason?

If notice is received at least 5 days in advance then a refund can be made. Any refunds for places cancelled less than 5 days in advance will be made at the manager’s discretion.

Is this programme registered with the Care Inspectorate?
