Aberdeenshire will welcome riders from across the globe in September 2026 as the inaugural Trans Caledonia Enduro brings world-class mountain bike racing to Deeside and Donside.
Taking place from 6–12th September 2026, Trans Caledonia will see 80 riders from 19 nations take on a six-day journey across some of Scotland’s most iconic riding destinations. While the event spans multiple regions across the country, Aberdeenshire hosts the opening stages of the race.
On Monday 7 September, riders will race from Ballater to Banchory across trails showcasing the best of Royal Deeside riding. The following morning, racing heads to Pitfichie before the event continues towards Glenlivet.
The event is led by Banchory-based mountain bikers Katie May and Matt Hale alongside former professional downhill and enduro racer Chris Hutchens, with support from a wider crew across Scotland including Inverurie rider James Davidson, members of the local trail and guides community and mechanic support from Banchory bike shop 20Twenty.
Katie May said:
“We’re really excited to bring Trans Caledonia to Aberdeenshire. The riding here is incredible, and it feels special to welcome riders from all over the world to the trails and communities that mean so much to us.”
“Mountain biking events bring significant benefits to Aberdeenshire, strengthening both the local economy and the region’s growing reputation as a premier outdoor destination. These events attract riders and spectators who support local businesses such as cafés, bike shops, accommodation providers, and tourism services, all of which are already well‑developed to welcome visiting cyclists. Aberdeenshire’s trail network—maintained by dedicated community groups like the Aberdeenshire Trail Association—offers diverse riding experiences, from long descents in Aboyne to championship‑grade routes at Pitfichie, which regularly hosts major downhill and enduro races. The popularity of events such as Trans Caledonia, highlights the region’s appeal and helps sustain investment in new facilities, including the £750k Tarland trail centre development. Together, these factors boost tourism, encourage outdoor participation, and reinforce Aberdeenshire’s status as an award‑winning mountain biking destination”
Danielle McKinlay, Team Manager Inward Investment and Sectoral Support, Aberdeenshire Council
“Live Life Outdoors introduced Mountain Biking to our overall cycling programme in 2025, and since then it has grown as a fantastic tool to support the wider delivery across our holiday programmes, our focused work with care experienced children, and alongside bespoke projects such as our Trail Therapy sessions with several secondary schools in North Aberdeenshire. With a well established Enduro calendar in the North East of Scotland, Trans Caledonia will provide a fantastic insight into a top level Enduro event as it takes on landscapes and locations that already are acknowledged as some of the finest in Scotland for Mountain Biking.”
Malcolm Grant, Outdoor Activity Officer, Live Life Outdoors
"This activity is being organised by Trans Caledonia. Aberdeenshire Council is not responsible for the acts and omissions of Trans-Caledonia and members of the public engaging in the activity do so at their own risk."
Matt Hale added:
“Deeside and Pitfichie are perfect places to start the event. There’s been a huge amount of work going into the trails locally over recent years and we know riders are going to love what Aberdeenshire has to offer.”
Pitfichie is now recognised as one of Scotland’s standout enduro venues, with sustainable trail maintenance led by Aberdeenshire Trail Association and a successful Scottish Enduro Series round hosted earlier this year. Trans Caledonia also builds on grassroots events such as the Doon Tha Brae Enduros, which helped showcase Aberdeenshire’s racing potential and paved the way for an international event to come to the region.
Supported by North East Adventure Tourism, the event sold out shortly after entries opened, attracting both professional and amateur riders from around the world.
Organisers are encouraging local riders, families and outdoor enthusiasts to come out and experience the excitement of a major international mountain bike event on Aberdeenshire’s home trails. Spectators will have the chance to cheer riders on and witness world-class mountain biking right on their doorstep.
